DJ Warrick Stock, known to so many as DJ Warras, was more than a broadcaster and DJ. He was a storyteller, a cultural bridge, and a son of the soil who never forgot where he came from.
Born in Durban, shaped in Vryheid, and polished in Johannesburg, Warras carried KwaZulu-Natal in his spirit and the nation in his reach. He moved effortlessly between worlds, Zulu and English, radio and television, tradition and modern life, reminding us that identity can be layered and proudly owned.
His final farewell reflected the life he lived. His sons and pallbearers, dressed in black and adorned with the umqhele, honoured not only their father, but a lineage, a heritage, and a man who chose to stand firmly in his roots. The cattle skin casket spoke of culture, respect, and belonging, a powerful reminder that even in death, Warras taught us how to honour who we are.
Beyond the spotlight, Warras was remembered as a warm and generous soul, someone who showed up fully for the people he loved. He mentored quietly, encouraged loudly, and never lost his sense of humour, even in demanding spaces. Those who worked alongside him speak of his professionalism, his kindness, and his ability to make others feel seen and heard. He did not simply occupy rooms, he gave them energy and meaning.
At just 40 years old, his life was cut short far too soon. The loss is heavy for his children, his family, his friends, and an industry that feels quieter without him. South African media has lost a familiar voice, but the echoes of his work, his laughter, and his presence will remain.
