The festive season in South Africa is one of my absolute favourite times of the year. The energy shifts. Schools close, families pack cars with cooler boxes and snacks, and everywhere you go, there’s a buzz of excitement in the air. Growing up, December was always about road trips, family reunions, and that feeling of endless summer days. And now, as a mom, it’s become about creating those same memories for my kids.
Every December, I get asked some version of these questions: Where’s the best place to visit during the festive season? What can we do as a family? And if we’re heading to Durban, where should we stay? So, I thought, why not put it all together here — a little festive guide from me to you.
Best Places to Visit During the Festive Season
South Africa spoils us for choice when it comes to festive season destinations. Whether you’re after beach vibes, city lights, or countryside peace, there’s something for everyone.
- Cape Town: December in Cape Town is pure magic. Long beach days at Clifton or Muizenberg, evenings at the V&A Waterfront, and of course, a Table Mountain hike (if you’re brave in the heat).
- Durban: Warm Indian Ocean waters make it a family favourite. The Golden Mile is always buzzing with holidaymakers, and the food (bunny chow, anyone?) is unmatched.
- Drakensberg: If you prefer mountain views over busy beaches, this is the perfect escape. Hiking, family-friendly resorts, and fresh mountain air — bliss.
- Garden Route: From Knysna to Plettenberg Bay, this stretch offers stunning scenery, outdoor adventures, and charming coastal towns.
For me, Durban holds a special place because it combines that “holiday energy” with real family friendliness.
Best Places to Stay Near Durban During the Festive Season
Accommodation in Durban during December can be tricky because everyone is flocking there. But here are some solid options:
- Umhlanga Rocks: Known for its safe beaches, amazing restaurants, and luxury hotels. Perfect for families and couples alike.
- Ballito: Just a short drive from Durban, it’s quieter than the city but still packed with festive activities and beachfront stays.
- Durban North & La Lucia: These suburbs give you a balance of proximity to the city and a calmer atmosphere.
- Holiday resorts and self-catering lodges: If you’re traveling with kids (like me), these are lifesavers because you get space and flexibility.
One year, we booked a self-catering apartment in Umhlanga with another family. It worked so well — the kids had their own little corner, and the adults enjoyed evenings on the balcony with the ocean breeze.
Best Things to Do in South Africa Over the Festive Season
December in South Africa isn’t just about where you go; it’s about what you do. Some of my top festive activities include:
- Beach days: Nothing says South African summer like sunscreen, sandcastles, and salty hair.
- Game drives: Kruger National Park, Pilanesberg, or even smaller reserves — a safari is always a win.
- Christmas markets: Cape Town, Joburg, and Durban all host incredible markets with crafts, food, and festive cheer.
- Road trips: The open road, packed snacks, and family sing-alongs. Whether you’re heading down the N3 to Durban or up the N1 to Limpopo, road trips are a tradition in themselves.
- New Year’s Eve celebrations: From the Cape Town fireworks to Durban beachfront parties, the country really knows how to welcome a new year.
My personal favourite? A road trip. There’s something about loading the kids, the cooler box, and the playlist into the car and setting off. The journey itself becomes part of the holiday.
Best Wishes for the Festive Season and New Year
Before I wrap up, I want to take a moment to send love your way. The festive season is different for everyone — some are traveling, some are staying home, and others are navigating tough times. Wherever you find yourself, I truly wish you rest, joy, and memorable moments with the people who matter most.
So here’s me sending you best wishes for the festive season and New Year. May 2025 bring you peace, laughter, and a little more balance (we could all use that, right?).
Final Thoughts
The festive season in South Africa is about more than just destinations — it’s about the connections we make, the laughter we share, and the memories we create. Whether you’re chasing Durban’s warm waves, exploring Cape Town’s vibrant streets, or enjoying a quiet mountain escape, I hope you find your version of festive magic this year.
