Before You Judge South Africans, Understand What They’re Actually Saying

Across social media, there has been a growing trend of people outside South Africa dismissing South Africans as xenophobic whenever concerns about illegal immigration are raised. Many of these comments come from people who have never lived here, never experienced our daily realities, and often rely on viral clips or politically motivated influencers instead of understanding what is actually happening on the ground.

That is not only unfair, it is intellectually lazy.

South Africans have every right to expect their government to enforce its own immigration laws. Every sovereign nation in the world has borders, immigration policies and legal processes that determine who may enter, work and settle within its territory. Wanting those laws to be respected is not the same as hating foreigners.

Unfortunately, many online commentators deliberately blur that distinction.

Illegal Immigration Is Not the Same as Immigration

South Africa has welcomed migrants, refugees and asylum seekers for decades. Many people from across Africa have built successful lives here, started businesses and contributed positively to our economy and communities.

The debate that many South Africans are having today is not about legal migrants.

It is about illegal immigration, border management, crime, pressure on public services, unemployment and whether the government is doing enough to enforce existing laws.

Those are legitimate policy questions. They deserve honest discussion rather than emotional accusations.

Please Stop Using South Africa to Fight Someone Else’s Political Battle

One of the biggest problems with online debates is that people take South Africa’s challenges and force them into narratives that suit their own politics.

Some influencers claim that South Africans simply need to “create more jobs” or suggest that unemployment could somehow disappear within days if attitudes changed.

That ignores reality.

South Africa continues to live with the economic legacy of apartheid. More than thirty years into democracy, many communities still face poverty, failing infrastructure, unequal education, high unemployment and crime. These problems cannot be solved overnight, and pretending otherwise does nothing except spread misinformation.

South Africans Are Asking Their Government to Govern

Every citizen has the right to expect their government to:

  • Secure the country’s borders.
  • Enforce immigration laws fairly.
  • Protect communities from crime.
  • Create an environment where businesses can grow and create jobs.
  • Put the interests of the country’s citizens at the centre of public policy while respecting human rights.

These expectations are neither unusual nor extreme. They are the same expectations citizens have of governments around the world.

Get the Facts Before Passing Judgment

It is easy to comment from thousands of kilometres away. It is much harder to understand the daily realities that millions of South Africans face.

Before labelling an entire nation, take the time to understand what people are actually saying.

Most South Africans are not calling for hatred or violence. They are asking for effective governance, lawful immigration, safer communities and opportunities for citizens who continue to struggle in one of the world’s most unequal societies.

There is room to support the dignity and rights of migrants while also recognising a country’s right to enforce its laws. Those positions are not mutually exclusive.

The conversation should be based on facts, not slogans. And if we are going to discuss South Africa, let’s discuss the country as it is—not as a convenient example for someone else’s political argument.
