I have a bone to pick with Standard Bank and Capitec Bank. These are institutions we trust to protect our hard-earned money, yet my recent experience has left me feeling like they’ve become safe havens for fraudsters instead. The heartache, the disappointment, and the frustration I’ve gone through over the past few weeks have been nothing short of devastating.

How It Started

A few weeks ago, I was scammed while trying to buy an embroidery machine from a company I came across on Facebook Marketplace. For me, this wasn’t just a purchase — it was meant to be an investment, a way to supplement my income and support my family.

I paid R22,800, but almost immediately something didn’t feel right. Within hours, I realized I had likely fallen into a scam. My heart sank.

Acting Quickly — or So I Thought

Less than 12 hours after making the payment, I contacted my bank, Standard Bank, to report the fraud. Because the payment had not yet been processed as an immediate transfer, I believed there was still time to stop it.

I remember a Standard Bank consultant calling Capitec Bank (where the scammer’s account was held) while I was still on the line. For a moment, I felt a flicker of hope. Surely, if both banks acted quickly, my money could be frozen and recovered.

The Bitter Reality

Days later, after endless follow-ups, Standard Bank sent me a short email. Attached was a letter saying they were unable to recover the funds. That was it. No explanation. No breakdown of what action was taken. No reassurance that my case had been taken seriously.

It felt like my money had just disappeared into thin air. I was left powerless, bitter, and broken. Losing that kind of money isn’t something I can just brush off. It wasn’t play money — it was meant to help me build a living. Now, instead of hope, I’m left with financial strain and regret.

The Bigger Question: How Do Scammers Even Open These Accounts?

What frustrates me most is how easily scammers seem to open bank accounts to steal from people. With all the regulations and technology available, how is it possible for fraudsters to create accounts that are seemingly untraceable?

Banks tell us they are protecting us, yet criminals continue to exploit their systems while customers like me pay the price. I did my part — I checked that the seller appeared to be a registered company, not just an individual. I tried to be cautious. And still, I was scammed.

A Failure of Protection

It’s heartbreaking that in today’s digital world — with advanced tracking tools, fraud detection systems, and so much technology at their disposal — banks still fail to protect ordinary people. Instead of acting swiftly, they hide behind generic emails and leave victims stranded.

I can’t help but feel that Standard Bank and Capitec Bank failed me. Their systems should be strong enough to prevent fraudulent accounts from operating in the first place. Their response teams should be swift and empathetic enough to step in when customers raise the alarm. But instead, I was left alone to deal with the loss.

Where Do We Go From Here?

This experience has shattered my trust in banks. They are supposed to be the safeguard of our money, yet they continue to allow criminals to thrive. If the banks had acted faster, perhaps my money could have been saved. Instead, I am left with nothing but heartache and financial stress.

I share my story not just for myself, but for every person who has fallen victim to fraud. The system needs to change. Banks need stricter measures to prevent scams and a stronger commitment to helping victims. Until that happens, fraudsters will continue to win, and ordinary South Africans will continue to suffer.

A Word of Caution

If you’re making online purchases, especially through platforms like Facebook Marketplace, be extra cautious. Don’t assume the banks will protect you if something goes wrong — because in my case, they didn’t.

Sadly, it feels like we have to protect ourselves, because the very institutions we trust with our money are not protecting us.
