Every winter, my skin seems to go through the same struggle. The cold air, hot showers, and dry indoor heating leave it feeling tight, flaky, and uncomfortable. No matter how much moisturiser I applied, it often felt like my skin was dry again within a few hours. I found myself buying product after product, hoping the next one would finally be the solution. More often than not, I was left disappointed and with a lighter wallet.
This winter, however, things changed. I stopped chasing expensive skincare products and started making something simple at home. It has become one of the best additions to my winter routine, and honestly, my skin has never looked healthier.
My homemade winter body oil starts with something many people already have at home: baby oil. Instead of using it straight from the bottle, I gently heat it over a low flame and add rosemary leaves, sage, cloves, and cinnamon sticks. As the ingredients slowly infuse, the oil changes from its clear appearance to a beautiful golden colour. Once it has cooled, I strain out the herbs and spices and pour the oil into a clean bottle ready to use.
What surprised me the most was not just the warm, comforting scent, but how differently it felt on my skin. Unlike some body oils that leave behind a greasy layer, this infused baby oil feels incredibly light. It absorbs quickly, leaving my skin feeling soft, smooth, and deeply moisturised without making me feel sticky. Even after getting dressed, my skin feels comfortable instead of coated in oil.
Over the weeks, I noticed another difference. My skin no longer looked dull and tired. It developed a healthy glow that I usually only associate with the warmer months. The rough patches on my elbows and knees became much softer, and the dry, ashy appearance that often comes with winter became a thing of the past. Friends even started commenting on how healthy and radiant my skin looked, which is always a nice confidence boost during the colder months.
Of course, I cannot say with certainty which ingredient is responsible for the results I’ve experienced. Rosemary, sage, cloves, and cinnamon have long been used in traditional home remedies and are appreciated for their natural aromas, but I simply enjoy the combination because it works well for me. Whether it is the infusion itself or the fact that the oil encourages me to moisturise consistently every day, the results have been impressive enough that I now make a fresh batch every winter.
One of the biggest lessons this experience has taught me is that good skincare does not always have to come with a luxury price tag. The beauty industry constantly introduces new creams, serums, and oils that promise perfect skin, but sometimes the simplest solutions are the ones that work best. A bottle of baby oil is affordable, the herbs and spices are often already sitting in the kitchen cupboard, and the finished product lasts for weeks.
I have also found that when I apply the infused oil immediately after a warm shower, while my skin is still slightly damp, it absorbs even better. That small habit helps lock in moisture before my skin has a chance to dry out, making the effects last much longer throughout the day.
If you’re thinking about trying this yourself, it is important to heat the oil gently over a low temperature rather than allowing it to boil. Once the herbs and spices have infused, strain them out completely before storing the oil in a clean bottle. If you have particularly sensitive skin or known allergies, it is always wise to do a small patch test before applying it all over your body.
Winter will probably always be a challenging season for our skin, but I’ve learned that caring for your skin doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Sometimes, all it takes is a little creativity, a few simple ingredients, and the willingness to try something different. For me, this homemade infused baby oil has become a winter essential, and it is one skincare hack I will be keeping long after the cold weather has passed.
